Dr Peter Kraljič, 69, is a Director Emeritus at McKinsey, where he spent 32 years and held a number of senior positions until his retirement in 2002. Focused mainly on industrial clients in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, automotive assembly, and steel and aluminium sectors, he was also a member of McKinsey's Personnel Development Committee and has managed the company's activities in France as a General Director. Dr Kraljič has also written a number of scientific and business articles for publications such as the Harvard Business Review and Le Figaro Economic. He has also recently led special projects aimed at economic growth and job creation in Germany and Brazil. Peter graduated from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia (Faculty of Metallurgy), and holds a PhD degree from Polytechnic University in Hannover, Germany. He also holds a Masters degree in business management from the INSEAD business school, France.

In September 1983, Harvard Business Review published a ground-breaking article by Dr Kraljič that would shape the purchasing function as we know it today.

Working as a McKinsey consultant in the 1970s at a major chemical firm that found itself highly exposed to supply chain disruptions, Dr Kraljič identified 70-80 major categories that required individually defined approaches. These delivered such competitive advantage that he was required to keep his model a secret. It would be 10 years before it was published.

Dr Peter Kraljič will inaugurate the 2009/2010 MBA program with a public lecture on 'Competitiveness, Education, Innovation and Values'.
