Albania

Albania hopeful for many joint activities with the United States (Balkans.com): Minister Ilir Meta visited Washington DC last week "to reconfirm once again the extremely close relations between Albania and the USA and at the same time to exchange views and ideas on various issues, particularly on those related to the state of play in our region and its integration prospect, as well as on other important international issues, as that of Afghanistan, where Albania continues to be engaged with an increased contribution, now as a NATO member state, the most important security Alliance we are in,  thanks also to US support.
Bangladesh

 

The quality of Bangladesh's economic growth (The Daily News): Bangladesh is believed to have performed well over the years as far as the indicators are concerned.

For better bargain on ICT (The New Nation): The software and IT enabled service (ITES) comprise one of the fastest growing sectors of the national economy. Software export from Bangladesh has grown fast over the years. The sector had meager export earnings of US$2.24 million in 2000-01 which rose to US$33m in 2008-2009 against the set target of $30m.

Prime Bank to hike investment in telecom, power projects (The Financial Express): Prime Bank has planned to scale up financing in infrastructures including the capital-intensive power and telecom sectors as part of its efforts to boost industrialisation in the country, its chief executive officer (CEO) said Monday.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

EU Commissioner for Enlargement says Bosnia and Herzegovina is moving in the right direction (Balkans.com): Štefan Füle, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy  visited Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, 18 March 2010, for the first time since being appointed to the new European Commission in November last year.

Algeria

Algeria to launch 5-year, USD 250-bln development plan (Zawya.com): Algeria is preparing to launch a five-year development plan with a cash blanket of USD 250 billion, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said Monday. In a speech before a seminar of Algerian and Portuguese businessmen devoted "to the examination of the most favorable conditions for the enhancement of economic and commercial relations between Algeria and Portugal," Ouyahia said that Algeria is seeking, as part of the plan, to improve its infrastructure, foreign investment policy and human resources.

DR Congo could win debt relief deal by June: IMF (Reuters): Democratic Republic of Congo could win a deal to wipe out the bulk of its $11 billion debt in time for June celebrations marking 50 years of independence, the International Monetary Fund said on Saturday.

Macedonia


FYR Macedonia eyes higher living standard, EU ascension (Balkans.com): IBRD has worked closely with other development partners to help the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia recover from conflict in 2001 to be on the threshold of joining the European Union. From boosting school enrollment to slashing the red tape hampering business registration, IBRD and the government have seen a wide range of results from these years of collaboration.

IMF: Sri Lanka loosened monetary policy without damage (Lanka Business Online): Sri Lanka was among the countries that ran counter-cyclical monetary policy in 2009 without damaging fallouts but low income Asian nations have to invest more, International Monetary Fund officials said.
Jovees to invest in Sri Lanka (Daily News): An Indian company is exploring the possibility of setting up a cosmetics manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka. JR Herbal Care India Limited Business Head Rakesh Misri said as the economy stabilizes after the war, the year ahead will flourish for the FMCG industry.
SIB to go global, ties up with Sri Lankan bank (Financial Express): South Indian Bank (SIB) is going to partner with Sri Lanka’s leading private sector bank—Hatton National Bank (HNB)—to gain greater access to Indian diaspora across the world.
Syria

Syrian-Turkish Scientific Cooperation discussed (SANA): Prime Minister Mohammad Naji Otri Tuesday discussed means of cooperation with Turkish Minister of State in charge of Science and Technology, Mehmet Aydin, and Chairman of Turkish Scientific Research Council, Nukhet Yetis.

Zambia Kwacha to Gain 18% as Stocks Rise (Bloomberg): Zambia’s currency may gain 18 percent and stocks of Africa’s biggest copper producer are likely to rally 15 percent in 2010 as the nation’s economy and earnings improve, Renaissance Capital said.

Zambia, Congo Seek Funds to Mark Border (The Wall Street Journal): Zambia and Congo are seeking funds to resurvey and demarcate their common border in a bid to improve security and end border disputes in the mineral-rich region, the Zambia-Congo joint permanent commission said Monday.
